Ordinary Items, Extraordinary Impact
For most of us, toilet paper, Kleenex, and paper towels are items we use unconsciously on a daily basis. But what if they hold a greater purpose in others’ lives? At Meg’s house, they allow for victims of violence to have a sense of normality in their lives. It provides comfort to know that their needs will be taken care of, which creates a safe space for them to rebuild their lives. The ability to help these individuals stands as the foundation of why donating these products matters.
A Safe Place to Rebuild
Meg’s House serves anyone in the McCormick, Edgefield, and Greenwood communities who needs assistance in escaping a range of violent situations. A quote from their website explains, “Meg’s House is an organization that responds to the emotional and physical needs of those experiencing domestic violence by providing services based on a trauma reduction model.” There are 3 key aspects of Meg’s house’s mission: safety, dignity, and support. Safety is found throughout the immediate shelters, assistance with relocation, confidentiality of support teams, and legal assistance. The leaders give their all to shield these victims while they rebuild themselves to eventually go on their own. Dignity is enumerated by the hope that the residents will have control over their lives once again by teaching independence and self-love.
Some services offered in this process include similar foundations, housing advocacies, support groups, and educational programs. Support is found in the donors and leaders who run Meg’s House, the ones who pledge to do their absolute best to rehabilitate domestic violence survivors. But the need for these services reaches far beyond just a few individuals, affecting thousands every year.

Behind the Statistics
The impact of domestic violence is not isolated; it has become a widespread issue across South Carolina. In SC alone, about 30,000 partner-based violence cases occur every year, reported by then South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. What if you or someone you know becomes a part of the statistics? For many, that moment begins with a single frightening night. Imagine a mother quietly shuffling to pack a small bag for herself and her children, unsure of where they will go but recognizing they can’t stay any longer. They only arrive at Meg’s House with nothing but the clothes they are wearing, living through the fear, uncertainty, and hope for a new beginning- a chance they desperately need. In this moment, something as simple as warm towels, tissues, and toiletries can provide relief and a renewed sense of security.
Small Actions, Big Change
Students here, at NSHS, have an opportunity to help through small donations that help restore the dignity of those like the mother previously mentioned. Most of us already add these items to our cart weekly, and by including a few extras, we can take a small action with a big impact. Participation in this kind of activity fosters character that lasts a lifetime, such as empathy and compassion. Even if students never know the person they help, it doesn’t take away from the act of giving. These simple donations help further the sense of normalcy for residents as they transition from Meg’s house to independent living. You can make a difference by contributing your donations by February 27.
