A New Era For Student Journalism at NSHS

Starting a school newspaper takes a lot of work, and here at Ninety Six High School, it’s also the revival of something we’ve been missing for years.

Starting a school newspaper takes a lot of work, and here at Ninety Six High School, it’s also the revival of something we’ve been missing for years. When asked about the last time our school had a newspaper, Mr. Sprowl told me it had been more than twenty years since one was regularly made. Then, more recently – about four years ago – a group of students worked with Mrs. Blackwell and Mr. Sprowl to restart the paper. However, when those students became more involved with other activities and classes became more demanding, the group gradually went away. Now, in 2026, a new group of students has taken up the responsibility of bringing the newspaper back to life.

NSHS has had a history of student-produced journalism. In the mid-2000’s, the school offered a class called TV Communications, where students worked together and created a weekly news broadcast. Each week, students pitched ideas, planned how to get footage, and edited their segments to fit within a 5 to 7 minute broadcast, where a different student served as anchor each week. Mrs. Ngo, who took the class while a student at NSHS, said she loved the experience and still has a VHS tape of a broadcast she helped produce. Mrs. Ngo also said her favorite part of the class was being trusted by the school with the responsibility of working on a real world project.

The same spirit of creativity and responsibility continues today with Weekly Wildcat. Each week, our staff will work to bring you stories that keep you informed, connected, and involved in our school community. Our goal is to not just report on events, but also help students make the most of their time as Wildcats and build a good foundation for their future.

It is with great honor to present the leadership staff of the Weekly Wildcat for the 2025-2026 school year:

Gibson Bell, General Editor

Maycie Krajewski, News Editor

Valerie Panchame-Lopez, Design Editor

Mr. Dan Mackin, Advisor
