Is South Carolina Ready for a Senate Shake-Up?

Annie Andrews, a pediatrician-turned-politician, is taking on long-time Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina’s 2026 race. With Graham’s approval ratings slipping, Andrews is aiming to leverage social media, small-dollar donations, and her professional credibility in healthcare to mount a serious challenge.

A Pediatrician Enters The Race

Dr. Annie Andrews, a Charleston-area pediatrician and mom, has emerged as one of the most closely watched challengers in this year’s South Carolina Senate race, taking on four-term Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham with a campaign built around healthcare and family issues that she says are important to South Carolinians. After nearly two decades working in children’s hospitals, Andrews says she entered the race because Washington has lost focus on the everyday concerns facing South Carolinians, from rising medical costs to public health outbreaks. Her campaign has relied mainly on small-donor support and social media engagement.

The 2025 Political Shift

In 2025, Democrats rode a ‘blue’ wave of unexpected wins that shook up races long considered safe for Republicans. Voter frustration with national leadership, especially low approval ratings for President Donald Trump among independents, helped drive the shift. Across the country, Democrats flipped several GOP-held state legislative seats, broke Republican supermajorities in places like Iowa and Mississippi, and scored surprising wins in local and statewide contests that had rarely gone blue. The results showed that even traditionally red areas were open to change.

Local elections showed similar movement. In Tennessee’s 7th congressional special election, every county in the district shifted several percentage points toward the Democratic candidate, with Davidson County swinging nearly 20 percentage points.

Shifting
Strategies

The 2025 results may offer lessons for 2026. Pediatrician-turned-candidate Annie Andrews has emerged as a credible challenger to longtime incumbent Lindsey Graham. Andrews brings two advantages that have mattered in recent Democratic upsets: skepticism among voters about Republican leadership on healthcare, and a strong use of social media to mobilize younger voters.

By contrast, Graham has relied more heavily on traditional advertising and high-dollar political action committees, or PACs, for short. Many Democratic voters, however, have shown a preference for candidates who reject corporate PAC money and instead depend on grassroots fundraising.

The Power of Social Media

A candidate's social media strategy and fundraising often go hand-in-hand. Candidates who built energetic online followings in the previously mentioned 2025 elections turned their social media engagement into small-dollar donations and used volunteer networks for outreach. This strategy helped several previously underdog campaigns win. Zohran Mamdani’s New York mayoral campaign is a clear example of social-first outreach paying off.

Delivering a Strong Campaign Message

As expected from a pediatrician, Andrews prioritizes healthcare as part of her campaign. Dr. Andrews has sharply scrutinized RFK Jr., whom Lindsey Graham voted to confirm, citing the ongoing measles outbreak as a public health failure. The appointment of Kennedy was a major factor in motivating her to enter the Senate race, with Andrews telling the Telegraph, “The day RFK Jr. was nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services was the day I decided to enter this race.” Andrews consistently highlights the Health Department’s shortcomings, stating on X that it’s “time to lean into our expertise”, citing her professional credibility. These statements and actions emphasize her message: that it’s time South Carolina elects real medical professionals.

Campaign Takeaways

Dr. Annie Andrews has made it clear: she’s had enough of the current administration and the Department of Health, citing its perceived failures as her central reason for running. Through building a strong social media campaign, she will be able to reach a large group of voters, far more than Graham. She’s already outpacing Lindsey Graham in individual donations, and, despite Graham accepting corporate PAC donations, if she keeps up this momentum, Andrews may be able to compete with fundraising giants like Graham. Her message is clear: the wrong people are in charge of the nation’s healthcare, and it’s time real professionals are elected to Congress.” If Andrews maintains her focus on these campaign strategies, she could mount a serious challenge to Lindsey Graham, potentially ending his 20-year tenure as a Senator.
